The Chi Lin (Kirin), or Oriental unicorn, was first seen in China in 2697 B.C. Since then, its rare mythical appearances have heralded great events. They are considered to be an especially good omen at the birth of a child (one is said to have visited the mother of Confucius to foretell of her son's greatness). Like the European unicorn, the Chi Lin's horn symbolize its purity and spiritual, beneficent nature.
